Select Peaks of Greater Yellowstone

When author, Tom Turiano set out to publish his second book, Select Peaks of Greater Yellowstone, A Mountaineering History And Guide, he turned to Portis Group for the execution of design and production. The Greater Yellowstone region illuminated in the book includes 13 primary mountain ranges and 107 of the highest and most interesting peaks. Tom asked Portis Group to determine the best way to organize and present more than a decade of research. At over 500 pages, this comprehensive knowledge base contains historic information and photos, profiles of past and present mountaineers, aerial view mountain photos with overlaid ascent routes, maps, geologic highlights and detailed route finding information for every peak. The challenge was to make all of this content easy to read while also providing interesting and efficient navigation. The design solution is based on strong use of typography to clearly define and organize the different sections and to keep the chapters consistent. Special attention was given to the cover design to assure it would stand out on a crowded shelf and signal that it contains more than other guide books.
